Plan the Planting Before You Buy

Identifying the best place to locate palm tree additions and the right type to suit the location must come before shopping for trees. Most palm varieties will require a water source and protection from strong north winds. Planting palm trees by a body of water is a great idea since it moderates temperature and creates a tropical miniclimate. Palm trees sold here at Beltran’s Nursery and Landscape will most definitely grow in your area as long as you live locally in Southwest Florida. You do, however, have to make sure that the micro-climate where you plant the palm works.

Where to Plant

When deciding where to place your palm trees, available spaces that can allow for 10-15 feet all-around of future growth could be appropriate. This space must be clear below and above ground as well since the roots and canopy of the tree will grow wide. Predicting how your tree will look as it continues to grow is fairly simple since palm trees keep the same basic structure, just growing taller and wider over time.

Will It Drain?

If you don’t make sure that the soil where you plant your palm drains well, you’ll kill it before it even has a chance to make a landscaping impact. Roots that remain saturated for long periods die. Checking drainage just requires a shovel, a bucket of water, and some time. Dig a hole and clock how long a hole full of water takes to drain. If it’s a fairly short period of time, you’re good to go. If not, you’ll need to modify the soil before you plant or choose another location. We can help. The professionals here at Beltran’s Nursery and Landscape know all the tricks and rules for growing palm trees well.

The most common varieties sold here at Beltran’s Nursery and Landscape include the following:

  • Areca
  • Adonidia
  • Foxtail
  • Bismarckia
